Most apartment leasing offices in the Boston area routinely conduct credit checks and criminal background checks on their prospective tenants. They do this to comply with Federal, State and Local apartment leasing guidelines and the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
There are various databases where apartment complexes draw information on prospective
tenants. One is any of the three credit bureaus, namely Equifax, Transunion and Experian. Another source of information is the rental history databases which store rental history. A third is the sex offender registry and finally apartments can dip into court records to check for bankruptcies and judgements.
